As you enter the final year of your graduation/ post-graduation, you will have a sense of anxiety about how to get a job of your choice. Also on your mind would be how to prepare, what to know, what domains to focus on, what skills are in demand, and the companies you need to target. While the finishing and preparation usually happens in the final year, to enjoy a progressive career, your preparation must begin much before and also be more comprehensive. Preferably as you enter your degree course.
The job market is getting more and more competitive. You are expected to have more skills, more market knowledge, better communication, good disposition, good aptitude and good ‘EQ’ (Emotional Quotient) as the HR managers love to refer to it. So identify the weak spots and get to work on them gradually so you are best equipped by the time you reach your final year. Begin with soft skills.
Communication skills are really essential as you will invariably be part of a team and have to collaborate to achieve the tasks allotted to you. Work on both written and spoken communication and this will definitely help you. Next, if you are an engineer and envisage working as a tech professional/ programmer, work on your tech skills. At least identify the areas that interest you and begin getting exposed to those spaces – languages, platforms, standards, environments, scripts etc. If you are planning to get into marketing, then know the spaces, market size, opportunity, products, services etc. So you would do well to understand at least 5 growing markets – consulting, telecom, ERP, networking and medical electronics, for example. Have a snapshot of these spaces – market size, players, growth potential, opportunities, salaries etc.
As you enter final year, you might want to take up certification programs in any of the above mentioned domains or at least identify them.
Besides, do participate in debates, attend workshops, seminars, subscribe to newsletters and try to circulate online and on ground in domains you wish to pursue a career.
Last but not the least, get into general reading whenever you find time. This will hold you in good stead in the long run. Read books and subscribe to threads and content on finance, marketing, management, economics and more. Even if you begin as a programmer or a tech professional, a good understanding of these subjects is essential if you aspire for a management/ leadership position in a large corporation as you grow and will be helpful.
